The Black Watch Regiment is one of the most famous in the British Army. The name, in Gaelic ‘Am Freiceadan Dubh’, is derived from the ‘watch’ companies formed to patrol the Highlands after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, formed from Clan Campbell, Clan Fraser of Lovat, Clan Munro and Clan Grant. These companies were formed into the 43rd Regiment of Foot in 1739, which, over the following century served with distinction abroad. The regiment was reformed in 1881 to create the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Regiment. In 2006 the Regiment was merged into the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
